Charles Ellis Schumer is a senator from New York who has been the Senate Majority Leader since January 20, 2021.

Schumer, a Brooklyn native and Harvard College and Harvard Law School graduate, served three terms on the New York State Assembly.

In 1998, he was elected to the United States Senate and began serving New York in that chamber the following year.

Schumer previously served in the United States House of Representatives.

Valedictorian of his high school class, he received a perfect 1,600 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test at the time.

He attended Harvard University and majored in political science and law.

Despite passing the New York State bar exam in 1975, Schumer did not pursue a legal profession.

Schumer married Iris Weinshall in 1980, and the couple has two children.

Schumer was elected to the United States Senate in 1998, defeating Republican incumbent Alfonse D'Amato with about 55% of the vote
