Janet Louise Yellen is an American economist who has been the 78th Secretary of the Treasury of the United States since January 26, 2021.

Yellen is the first woman to occupy each of those positions, as well as the first to lead the White House Council of Economic Advisers.

Yellen was born and reared in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and attended Brown University before receiving her PhD in economics from Yale University in 1971.

From 1971 to 1976, she worked as an assistant professor at Harvard University before joining the Federal Reserve Board.

Yellen is an emeritus professor at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, where she has taught since 1980

Yellen served on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors from 1994 to 1997, having been appointed by President Bill Clinton.

Yellen was born on August 13, 1946, in the Bay Ridge, Brooklyn district of New York City, to a family of Polish Jewish descent.

In 1999, Yellen returned to Berkeley to teach until 2004, when she was appointed president of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco

Yellen is married to Nobel laureate economist George Akerlof.
